Here’s another life-changing question:
"How am I actively working against the things I say I want?"
Or asked differently, "How am I sabotaging myself yet blaming fate, the universe, God, my partner, my boss, traffic, the alignment (or misalignment) of planets, etc?"
Asking this question helps us gain clarity on at least four things:
What do I actually want?
Believe it or not, most of us don't know the answer to this question, which often exaggerates our discontentment.Â
What stories am I telling myself about why I don't have it?
We are storytelling creatures by nature. It's how we make sense of the complexity of existence. It's also how we get ourselves in trouble. (See the next question.)
Which of these stories are true, and which are works of fiction created by fear, shame, and past experience?
Sometimes, self-sabotage comes disguised as protection. Are your stories helping or holding you back?
How am I responsible?
This question is the most challenging because it cuts two ways: How am I responsible for where I am right now? And how am I responsible for getting where I want to go? (And, of course, the answer to both is 100%.)
