What are the essential elements of a good friend?
A few that come to mind:
Loyalty
Respect
Honesty
Generosity
Encouragement
Listening skills
Genuine interest
That’s a pretty solid start. I can’t imagine anyone would remove anything from this list. And if you bring each of these elements into your friendships, you’re probably doing better than most.
But do you know what’s missing?
What the people you care about actually value in a friendship.
While there are obviously elements everyone looks for (honesty, respect, etc.), friendship isn’t one-size-fits-all.
Deep down, we know this. People are as unique as the fingerprints on our hands. So, why do we assume what works for one person will work for another?
Here’s what we never stop to ask each other:
What does a great friendship look like to you? What makes you feel valued? How can I do better?
Most of us give others what we expect to receive, which is a great start, but it only goes so far.
What feels like closeness to one person is smothering to another. And we all perceive feedback, encouragement, and support differently.
Studies show that loneliness is increasing, and although connection is easier than ever, community is increasingly harder to find.
It’s great to show up for each other. We need it. But what if we started showing up for EACH other?
