There’s a story in the Christian New Testament where a group of people brings a blind man to meet this controversial teacher called Jesus. The group asks Jesus to cure their friend of his blindness.
And so the teacher spits in the guy’s face.
Can you imagine? Your friends lead you to someone who can supposedly change your entire life, and the first thing this person does is spit in your face? Incredible.
I love this story, but not for reasons mystical or theological—think about the metaphorical implications…
Sometimes, the process of having your eyes opened feels like someone spitting in your face.
It’s the harsh truth you didn’t see coming.
The pointed criticism.
The unorthodox, wildly unexpected approach.
The information that challenges everything you’ve ever believed to be true.
The truth doesn’t always arrive as a soothing ointment. Sometimes it splashes you in the face and dribbles down your chin, and all you want to do is wipe it off and get far away.
Resistance is the natural (and understandable) response. But willingness to sit with the discomfort might be the first step to seeing clearly.
It might just change your entire life.
I’d love to know how you see it. Join me in the comments!
